U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst is proposing a bipartisan bill to amend the Family and Medical Leave Act to ensure married couples who work for the same employer are not restricted in the amount of leave they can take under the law, Ernst’s office announced this morning. The FAIR Leave (Fair Access for Individuals to Receive Leave) Act will repeal the limits on the amount of leave that spouses working for the same employer have had. The bill enables eligible spouses working for the same employer to each take up to 12 work weeks (24 total) of unpaid leave in a 12-month period in the instance of the birth of a child, the placement and adoption of a child, and the care of a parent with serious health conditions. The bill also allows spouses to each take 26 weeks to care for a covered U.S. service member with a serious injury or illness.
