Starts Right Here, a Des Moines nonprofit that works with at-risk youths in the Des Moines Public Schools, on Tuesday received a $50,000 grant from Amerigroup Iowa to help students obtain high school diplomas through enhanced education support. Amerigroup’s funding will educate, equip and empower young people living in disadvantaged and oppressive circumstances with the opportunity to receive tutoring and mentoring, take advantage of school assemblies, on-site classroom curriculum and management, as well as proven educational support tactics and methods from administrators and educators, the organization said in a press release. The funding was announced at the nonprofit’s Southwest Fifth Avenue office in Des Moines by its founder, president and CEO, Will Holmes, and by Amerigroup’s plan president for Iowa, Jeffrey Jones. They were joined by Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds, who sits on the nonprofit’s advisory board, and Department of Human Services Director Kelly Garcia. “I am thrilled with the partnership Starts Right Here has developed with Amerigroup Iowa,” Holmes said. Holmes is also a rapper who goes by the name Will Keeps. “This is a company that truly cares about the welfare of at-risk youth in Iowa, and I am so grateful for their financial commitment to the mission of Starts Right Here.”
