The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Risk Management Agency will provide farmers a $5-per-acre discount on crop insurance if they plant cover crops, a method to reduce nitrates in water, Successful Farming reported. About 80 percent of Iowa’s cropland is insured through the federal crop insurance program.
