The State Historical Society of Iowa has recognized an East Village owner for his preservation of a historic property. The Margaret Keyes Award went to Baker-DeVotie-Hollingsworth Blocks, a property at 516-526 E. Grand Ave. that is commonly referred to as Studio Block. Owned by Timothy Rypma, the three Studio Block buildings were each constructed more than 110 years ago. “The long-term and significant preservation effort in the East Village was sparked by this building being saved from destruction in the 1970s,” the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs said in a release. “The project is noted for its exterior rehabilitation, key location in the neighborhood and impact on the streetscape and neighborhood revitalization efforts.”
