State orders Des Moines to remove I-235 speed camera

The Iowa Department of Transportation has ordered the city of Des Moines to shut down its eastbound Interstate Highway 235 speed camera at mile marker 4.9 near Waveland Golf Course by April 17. The DOT noted that the area had few accidents when the camera was installed — 14 over a two-year period — and had nine over a two-year period after the camera went in. The state called the 36,202 citations issued in 2012 and 42,156 in 2013 an “extremely high” tally and suggested out-of-towners were the main victims because locals knew the camera was there. “Automated enforcement should only be considered in extremely limited situations on interstate roads because they are the safest class of any roadway in the state and they typically carry a significant amount of non-familiar motorists,” the DOT wrote in its audit of the city’s report, citing state rules.
