Stock index shows $2.8 trillion loss since late July

The Wilshire 5000 Total Market Index has lost $2.8 trillion in value since the stock market slide began on July 22, CNNMoney.com reported.

Some $600 billion of that was lost on Wednesday, when the index and the Dow Jones industrial average both dropped about 520 points. Early numbers today are better; the Dow was up 124.95 points as of mid-morning, and the Nasdaq Composite index was up 38.94 points.
