Despite residents griping, Des Moines is home to 1.6 million parking spots within city limits — or seven parking spots for each of the city’s 217,521 residents in 2017, the Des Moines Register reports. The study was completed by the Mortgage Bankers Association, and found the parking infrastructure in the city was valued at $6.42 billion at a time when driving and parking demand is expected to decrease. The report counted total spaces in city limits, including residential driveways and private parking garages, along with public surface lots and on-street parking in the study’s final tally.
