Des Moines Register: The superintendent at Iowa’s Boys State Training School has resigned after a wave of violence at the Eldora facility, after 11 months on the job. Wendy Leiker was hired in August 2020 to take over the school, which a federal judge had ordered to change harsh disciplinary methods. The Iowa Department of Human Services said today that Leiker had resigned, effective Aug. 7. “Although we are limited in the information we can share, we want to make clear her departure is not due to any concern related to student safety,” department spokesman Matt Highland said in an email to the Des Moines Register. He did not say if the resignation had been requested by Leiker’s bosses.
