Eighty-nine percent of nonprofit organizations changed the way they provided their services in 2020, according to a report issued recently by BKD CPAs and Advisors. The accounting and advisory firm, which has offices in Des Moines, released its 2021 State of the Nonprofit Sector Report, which was created to identify how nonprofit groups were responding during the coronavirus pandemic. The results are based on a survey conducted Sept. 23 through Oct. 23. It included responses to 18 questions from 319 organizations nationwide. “The goal of this study is to highlight how organizations are adapting to the pandemic and what effect it’s having on their ability to provide programs and services,” said Senior Managing Consultant Dan Prater in a news release that linked to the survey’s findings. The survey also found that 70% of nonprofits experienced a decrease in net income as a result of the pandemic, 61% experienced a decline in fees for programs and services, and 29% indicated they had plans to eliminate programs and services. “In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, nonprofits across the country have helped to propel our communities forward and respond to increasing demands,” Tondeé Lutterman, national industry partner at BKD, said in the release.
