Studies show a sharp decrease in face-to-face time between parents and children, an important link to establishing healthy guidelines for children. In response, Gov. Terry Branstad has proclaimed Thursday, March 5, as Take Five Day to prevent youth substance use in Iowa. “Talk is an essential tool all of us can effectively use at home to increase the odds our children will make decisions that are good for their health and safety,” said Steve Lukan, director of the Governor’s Office of Drug Control Policy. “Any time is a good time to help our children make healthy choices, starting with Take Five Day.” The concept can also be used to help children deal with other challenges they face, including body image, bullying and Internet safety.
