Think global, be grateful

I read the global headlines. The words may vary, but the themes remain unchanged. I sense the contrast between my world and their world.

I take my son to the toy store, looking for the next new captivating toy he doesn’t have yet. Like me, a father – halfway across the world in Pakistan – takes his son to the marketplace. Moments later, he holds his son’s lifeless body amid the rubble left by a bomb blast. They also went looking for a toy.

I ponder over whether to opt for Chinese or Italian food on a family night out. A farmer in a village in Mozambique wonders how he will feed his family and where their next meal will come from. He too has his family’s best interests at heart.

I drive to work each morning in my comfortable car listening to my favorite radio station. A woman in Iran gets caught in the crossfire of the election riots and dies on the street. She also was on her way to work.

I complain about the weather on a rainy day, the impending cold and the thought of having to bundle up yet again. A mother in American Samoa remembers the enormous tsunami that swept away the daughter she held so tightly. We both live under the same sky.

With the holidays fast approaching, I obsess over what to buy and how to celebrate my planned vacation with family. An American soldier in Afghanistan gives up on the possibility of returning home during the holidays. He too wants to be with his family.

Enough said. The contrast is clear. Now, I know it’s time for me to be grateful this Thanksgiving.
