Jeff Chelesvig, president and CEO of the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines, has been elected to the executive committee of The Broadway League, the national trade association for the Broadway theater industry. In his role on the committee, which comprises 26 Broadway producers, theater owners and presenters from New York and across the country, Chelesvig will help the organization achieve its mission of fostering increased interest in Broadway theater and supporting the creation of profitable theatrical productions. The Broadway League represents theater owners and operators, producers, managers, and presenters of Broadway productions in more than 150 cities and 250 venues throughout the United States.
RLI Corp. is adding a new product line: quota-share reinsurance for crop insurance. The niche insurer, launched originally in the 1960s to write replacement contact lens insurance, has entered into a two-year agreement, beginning Jan. 1, to assume 6 percent of Producers Agricultural Insurance Co.’s multi-peril crop and crop hail premium and exposure. Farmers buy crop insurance to protect against crop losses due to natural disasters and other perils. Over the past 10 years, RLI has outperformed the overall commercial casualty combined ratio composite by an average of 17 points, according to BestLink.
Iowa’s rural Main Street index rose in January, but remained below growth neutral, according to a monthly survey of bank CEOs released Thursday by Creighton University. The index increased to 41.2 in January from 40.7 the month before, but Iowa’s rural Main Street economy has lost about 3.2 percent of its employment during the past year. That compares with a 1.5 percent loss for urban areas, IowaPolitics.com reported. Overall in an 11-state region including Iowa, the rural Main Street economy moved forward for a fifth consecutive month, but, according to the survey, continued to show significant economic weakness.
Iowa Workforce Development and Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) are partnering to host a free half-day career workshop for job seekers at the recently completed FFA Enrichment Center on the DMACC Ankeny campus. “Rising above the crowd – getting hired in today’s economy” will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on Jan. 26. Author Roxanne Rogers and career coach Cassandra Halls will serve as the keynote speakers at the event, which will include breakout sessions focused on interviewing tips, resume writing and best practices.
