Two sources have said that Apple, which is currently locked in a contract that makes AT&T the iPhone’s exclusive U.S. carrier, is building an iPhone that Verizon customers could buy, according to a Fortune Brainstorm Tech report. Currently the iPhone is incompatible with Verizon’s network. The contract with AT&T is set to expire next year, and rumors say that a Verizon compatible iPhone could be on the market by the summer of 2010.

First-time claims for unemployment insurance fell last week to their lowest level this year according to the Labor Department’s weekly report. There were 502,000 initial job claims filed in the week ended Nov. 7, which was down from 514,000 the previous week. Read more.

The price of gold continues to rise. It hit a record of $1,119 an ounce on Wednesday, according to an MSNBC.com report. Gold reached $1,000 an ounce in March 2008, and has surprised analysts who didn’t think the price could go much higher. Lee Enterprises Inc. reported fourth-quarter net income of $1.76 million, or 4 cents per share, which was up from a loss of $192.2 million, or $4.34 per share for the same quarter a year ago. The company had a net loss for 2009 of $123.2 million, or $2.77 per share, which was less than the net loss in 2008 of $880.3 million, or $19.64 per share.See the full report.
