The European Commission said that continent’s economy probably returned to growth in the current quarter after governments spent billions of euros to pull the region out of the worst recession in more than six decades, Bloomberg reported. The euro-area economy may expand 0.2 percent in the third quarter and 0.1 percent in the fourth after contracting 0.1 percent in the three months through June, the commission said in updated economic forecasts. For the full year, the economy may shrink 4 percent, the commission said, maintaining its May projection.
Drake University will dedicate a classroom at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday for its RaySociety. The classroom will be named in honor of Don and Dori Byers, who spearheaded the founding of the organization, which promotes lifelong learning. The classroom will be located in Drake’s Dial Center, 2407 Carpenter Ave. The Byers, former Gov. Robert Ray and his wife, Billie, and Drake Provost Michael Renner will attend the dedication. The RaySociety is offering a new group of classes on topics ranging from religious painting to personal safety to Native American archaeology. The RaySociety’s annual membership fee is $50, and most classes cost $25 each. The Iowa Insurance Division’s consumer advocate will have a final public hearing from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the state Capitol, Room 103, on the use of credit scores in pricing and underwriting insurance. The hearings will supplement a study being conducted for the division by St. Ambrose University in Davenport.
The American Diabetes Association of Iowa said that J. Barry Griswell, president of the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines, and Sunnie Richer, president of Des Moines-based DoExtra Corp., will turn the spotlight on their dancing skills for charity. The Third Annual Marvin and Rose Lee Pomerantz Legacy Ball: Dancing With the Stars – Des Moines Style, is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino. Hosts are Linda and Tom Koehn, CEO of the Waldinger Corp. Suku Radia, Rosalie Gallagher and Stan Reynolds will act as judges.
