The American Lung Association in Iowa’s 2019 “State of Tobacco Control” report gives Iowa mixed grades on its efforts to reduce and prevent tobacco use. The report gave Iowa failing grades on funding for tobacco prevention, the level of state tobacco taxes and on increasing the minimum age for sale of tobacco products to 21. However, Iowa’s strong smoke-free workplace law got an A grade. Despite Iowa receiving $274 million from tobacco settlement payments and tobacco taxes, the state does not fund tobacco control efforts at levels recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the report found. The association encourages Iowa to fully fund tobacco control efforts at CDC-recommended levels. In particular, this year’s report noted the need to focus on passing legislation to raise the state tobacco tax by $1.50 per pack.
