It’s a busy morning for Iowa transportation news. Here’s a look at what’s happening:

  • The Iowa Department of Transportation has posted an interactive map that will help motorists avoid road construction delays beginning with this weekend’s Memorial Day travel. The state has 47 highway and bridge projects planned, many with detours or lane closures. The website gives the project location, description, start date, completion date and contracted cost for major projects. Not all state projects are listed. Motorists may also visit www.511ia.org for updates on road conditions.Read more
  • The national nonprofit transportation research group TRIP reports that 22 percent of Iowa’s rural bridges were structurally deficient in 2014. TRIP issued a report calling for improvements to roads and bridges nationally in part to boost economic development and to protect the safety of an aging population. Iowa lawmakers raised the state fuel tax by 10 cents a gallon this year to raise approximately $200 million for projects. And the Greater Des Moines Partnership last week led a delegation of nearly 200 community leaders who pushed Congress to pass long-term funding for transportation projects. The current federal program expires on May 31.Read more
  • The eastbound Interstate Highway 80 exit ramp to U.S. 65/U.S. 6/Hubbell Avenue (exit 142) near Altoona is expected to reopen late today, the Iowa Department of Transportation reported. Traffic signals were installed at this reconstructed interchange. The entrance ramp to eastbound I-80 will be closed from approximately 5 a.m. May 26 until the end of August. Motorists will follow the signed detour to access I-80. The ramp reconstruction project is part of a larger multiphase project to replace the interchange, which is near Adventureland. Read more
