Traveling exhibit on Black women’s suffrage kicks off June 30
A new traveling exhibit documenting the contributions of Black women to the suffrage movement in Iowa kicks off a months-long tour this week. The public exhibit is slated to make stops at museums and public libraries throughout Iowa.
“Toward a Universal Suffrage: African American Women in Iowa and the Vote for All” launches the same year the country will recognize the centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote.
Nonwhite women, however, were often left out, overlooked or written out of the history surrounding the women’s suffrage movement. Through this exhibit, organizers want to make sure Iowans know their stories.
The exhibit is a collaboration of the Iowa Department of Human Rights Office on the Status of Women, the Central Iowa Community Museum and the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics at Iowa State University.
“Thanks to the hard work and passion of all of our collaborators, we hope this exhibit will add to the discussion around voting rights for women in the state of Iowa and throughout the nation,” Kristen Corey, staff member at the Office on the Status of Women, said in a release.
While some tour locations are still being finalized, the exhibit is scheduled to debut June 30 at the State Historical Museum of Iowa. It will remain on display through Aug. 2. Admission to the exhibit is free.

- Oct. 13-31: African American Museum of Iowa, Cedar Rapids
- Nov. 10-16: Bettendorf Public Library, Bettendorf
- Nov. 17-24: Hiawatha Public Library, Hiawatha
- Jan. 19-29, 2021: Kirkwood Community College, Cedar Rapids
