Trees Forever, a Des Moines-based environmental nonprofit, has announced the relaunch of its One Million Trees Central Iowa Initiative. The initiative focuses on planting and protecting trees and advocating for policy to reach the goal of increasing the tree canopy in Polk County and the surrounding nine counties by 1 million trees. According to a news release, Iowa’s tree canopy coverage has dropped to 4% from 20% when Iowa was in its native state. At a relaunch event on May 1, Trees Forever unveiled a collaborative website to help individuals, communities and companies track the progress by recording trees they have planted or preserved. Trees Forever is also offering cost-free TreeKeeper trainings to get more skilled volunteers ready to assist the initiative. The project will expand to host tree distribution events and tree plantings, and do outreach to companies and communities to find volunteers, the release said. A special emphasis will be given to launch new programs to help get trees to underserved communities, and help to educate the public on the importance of growing trees.
