Trusses are being put in place this week for a pedestrian bridge over the Raccoon River, connecting Gray’s Lake to a 75-acre neighborhood and downtown Des Moines.

The $3.8 million bridge is part of Hubbell Realty Co.’s Gray’s Station development just south of Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway between Southwest 11th and Southwest 16th streets. Des Moines-based Jensen Construction Co., which specializes in bridge construction, built the trusses and is working with Hubbell to build the bridge.

The four trusses that make up the 12-foot-wide bridge range in weight from 64,000 to 122,000 pounds.

Hubbell officials expect the bridge for pedestrians and bicyclists to be completed by late fall.

The bridge will connect pedestrians and bicyclists with the trail that circles Gray’s Lake as well as with a Fleur Drive underpass that will connect Water Works Park and Gray’s Lake. Work on the underpass is underway.

The Hubbell pedestrian bridge will light up at night, similar to the bridge at Gray’s Lake.

While Hubbell is paying for the construction of the bridge, the city will operate and maintain it.To see more photos click here or go to www.facebook.com/dmbusinessrecord.
