U.S. drinkers choosing cans over glass-bottled beer since recession

Since the U.S. economy started to slide in 2008, more Americans have started drinking beer from cans as opposed to glass, according to the U.S. Beer Institute.

Since 2007, 53 percent of consumers have chosen beer in aluminum cans rather than higher-priced imported beer in glass bottles, up from 48 percent. But that doesn’t mean drinkers are leaving local brews completely behind.

Charlie Papazian, president of the Brewers Association, told Bloomberg that since the recession, the trend his group has seen is people increasing drinking “below premium” beer and high-end beer from craft breweries.
