UI Hospitals and Clinics to seek regents approval for expansion plan

University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics will seek Board of Regents approval this week for a long-term plan to construct three buildings as part of a wider effort to modernize facilities and replace old infrastructure, the Corridor Business Journal reported. The three buildings listed in the plan are a new hospital tower, a teaching and research building, and an ambulatory care building. UIHC already turns away more than 2,000 Iowans every year due to a lack of space, hospital CEO Suresh Gunasakaran told the CBJ. Also, many existing buildings are reaching the end of their 50-year useful life – a sign that older facilities will require large renovations at “exorbitant cost” to be safe for patients, he said.
