UnityPoint Health-Des Moines announced that Penn Avenue Outpatient Therapy was awarded the Physiological Oncology Rehabilitation Institute (PORi) Center of Excellence designation. “This designation affirms the commitment and expertise of our physical, occupational and speech therapists to helping patients undergoing cancer treatment,” said Dan Sweet, manager of Outpatient Therapy Services for UnityPoint Health-Des Moines. Oncology rehabilitation is a medical intervention in conjunction with a patient’s cancer treatment. A comprehensive oncology treatment plan is critically important to addressing all of the patient’s body systems that have been or may be affected by their cancer or its treatment. Team members from the UnityPoint Health Penn Avenue Outpatient Therapy Team, together with team members from the John Stoddard Cancer Center, worked to develop and define the only oncology rehabilitation program for patients in Central Iowa, the health system said in a press release. Currently, 11 UnityPoint Health-Des Moines therapists are PORi-certified. PORi’s goal is to elevate oncology rehabilitation to being a norm for cancer treatment and post-treatment in efforts to improve a patient’s quality of life.
