Iowa-based health care system UnityPoint Health is among 12 additional health care organizations nationwide that have invested in Civica Rx, a generic drug manufacturer aimed at addressing chronic shortages of medications, the Cedar Rapids Gazette reported. Civica Rx was created in September 2018 with the goal of stabilizing the supply of medications. The 12 health systems represent about 250 hospitals around the country. As a founding member, UnityPoint Health will purchase Civica Rx products for initial use in its hospitals, UnityPoint Health spokeswoman Heather Nahas said. Additionally, the health system “has invested financially in Civica Rx and will participate on its drug selection and medical advisory committees to help drive decisions that ensure medications most essential to patient care are accessible,” she said. Last fall, Civica Rx received an initial $30 million investment from more than 120 health organizations, among them Catholic Health Initiatives and Trinity Health, the partner health systems of Des Moines-based Mercy Health Network.
