Unveiling of art installation on Raccoon River ties into waterways

New York-based artist Mary Mattingly on May 30 will unveil a temporary art installation on the Raccoon River at Water Works Park that will invite viewers to reconnect with waterways. The event will feature comments by Chuck Gipp, director of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources at 1 p.m. The event launches work by the Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization on a regional plan for improving the water trails and nearby greenways in Greater Des Moines. The plan will incorporate the Water Works Park master plan and 150 miles of creeks and rivers in central Iowa.The Des Moines Parks and Recreation Department will offer 30-minute float trips starting at the pedestrian bridge at 11 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.
