The Urbandale City Council voted this week to support ProbioFerm LLC’s application for state tax incentives as part of the biotechnology firm’s plans to build a $1.9 million, 22,000-square-foot manufacturing and warehouse building on Justin Drive. The project is expected to create four new jobs over the next three years, according to a report to the council. ProbioFerm is a contract manufacturer of probiotics, which are bacteria and yeasts that are considered to provide benefits to the digestive system. The company was founded in 2009 and currently has 12 employees. On July 17, the Iowa Economic Development Authority board is expected to consider ProbioFerm’s request for $89,560 in tax credits and sales tax refunds under the High Quality Jobs Program. Urbandale would provide a $53,000 local match in the form of an industrial property tax exemption or through tax increment financing.
