In June of this year, Stacy VanLoon was diagnosed with breast cancer. The problem was detected early on through a mammogram, allowing her to be successfully treated.

“When the biopsy results come in — when you hear that word — you automatically see yourself six feet under,” she said. “I had to realize that it was not a death sentence.”

VanLoon says surviving breast cancer is one of her greatest personal accomplishments, and she hopes she can help other young women realize that it can happen to them. Women must be especially vigilant if there is a history of the disease in the family, she said. VanLoon’s mother was diagnosed with cancer at age 42, and has been a survivor for 14 years.

“I am a strong believer that early detection saves lives,” Van Loon said.

Cancer didn’t derail her career, either. She took about eight weeks away from her job at Bankers Trust Co. She was afraid that readjusting to work would be difficult upon her return, but was surprised to discover how quickly things returned to normal.

VanLoon is consumer services manager for the south branch location of Banker’s Trust and an assistant vice president. She manages 11 employees, both tellers and bankers; handles the consumer deposit and loan portfolio; and develops relationships with customers.

VanLoon grew up on the South Side of Des Moines. After graduating from Lincoln High, she worked in retail for a year before joining Bankers Trust at age 19.

Not long after, she decided she wanted a career in banking. While working for the company, she took part in a two-year training program of the Iowa Bankers Association, the Iowa School of Banking. She showed her desire to take on more responsibility, and rose through the ranks of the company.

“Bankers Trust promotes from within,” she said. “It’s known in the organization that you set your own destiny here. If you’re a performer willing to pitch in and seek more responsibility, Bankers Trust opens doors for you.”
