Verizon is making upgrades to its network in Des Moines as part of a multiyear redesign. According to a news release, the purpose of the redesign is to stay ahead of exponential data usage increases, upgrade technology, and personalize customer experiences. Des Moines’ network upgrades include deploying new cell sites to extend coverage and capacity in local communities, adding more capacity on fiber-optic cables to move more data through the network, and adding bandwidth to the cellular network to accommodate new services like wireless internet service for homes and businesses. Engineers in Des Moines have been deploying Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband, the release said. Currently, 70% of the cell sites that serve the Des Moines area have 5G Ultra Wideband service. Two new cell sites will be added later this year; one in Waukee and one in between Ankeny and Des Moines.
