Volunteer Iowa approves $13.3 million in grants for AmeriCorps programs

Volunteer Iowa announced today it has approved $13.3 million in federal and state AmeriCorps funding that will leverage private and local funding to support 1,040 AmeriCorps members. Among the largest single grants were more than $1.8 million to United Way of Central Iowa for its Iowa Reading Corps PreK AmeriCorps program, and more than $1.04 million to EMBARC [Ethnic Minorities of Burma Advocacy & Resource Center] for its Refugee RISE AmeriCorps program. With these awards, Iowa will now have over 1,600 AmeriCorps members serving Iowa-based organizations, and more than 7,300 National Service positions.
