Volunteers set record, pull 30 tons of trash from Wapsipinicon

Volunteers pulled 30 tons of trash from the Wapsipinicon River in eastern Iowa this year, setting a record for Project AWARE. A total of 433 volunteers from 11 states, Sweden and China helped participated in the five-day, 63-mile cleanup between Independence and Olin. A Watershed Awareness River Expedition involves hundreds of people who spend one to five days exploring Iowa’s rivers and picking up trash. All but 9 percent of the trash was recycled. Read more
