Both chambers of the Iowa Legislature list the fuel tax bill on the tentative debate calendar today, and a vote is possible. The legislation would increase the fuel excise tax by 10 cents per gallon. There is also talk of increasing fees on overweight truck loads, and requiring the Iowa Department of Transportation to identify ways to cut $10 million in spending in each of the next two years. The DOT has projected the state needs another $215 million per year to cover the most-needed road and bridge projects. The tax increase would generate most of that. Read more
