Voters in five Polk County communities today will vote on whether to implement a 1-cent sales tax that, if approved, will provide the cities with another source of revenue in addition to property taxes.

The vote comes five months after voters in Altoona, Des Moines, Pleasant Hill, West Des Moines, and Windsor Heights approved the tax, which went into effect in those communities on July 1.

If voters in Bondurant, Grimes, Johnston and the Polk County portions of Clive and Urbandale today approve raising the sales tax from 6% to 7%, collection would begin Jan. 1. The Dallas County portions of Clive and Urbandale already have the tax.

Money raised from the sales tax would be used to reduce property taxes and pay for capital improvement projects such as library expansions and new public safety buildings. If approved, the five communities would split more than $13.3 million in sales tax collections.

Nearly 60% of voters in the communities voting today turned down the proposed tax increase in March 2018.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. today. To find out your polling place, click here.
