The city of Waukee issued a record 1,489 building permits in 2020, topping the previous record of 1,282 set in 2019, city officials announced. The value of the permits issued in 2020 – $245.7 million – also was record-setting. The previous record was set in 2019 when the value of building permits totaled $209.8 million. “We’ve watched this pace of development in awe and [are] a bit astonished that even in a year as uncertain and filled with challenges as 2020, interest and investment in Waukee did not wane,” Waukee Mayor Courtney Clarke said in a prepared statement. A breakdown of the building permits issued in Waukee in 2020 shows 411 permits for single-family houses, 226 for townhomes, 19 for commercial and four for multifamily structures. The number of permits for single-family houses and the value of the permits – $116.6 million – was also a record. Waukee’s estimated population is 24,089 and city officials project it could reach 35,000 by 2030.
