Companies across the U.S. are becoming part of the new “wellness” trend, offering smoking-cessation guidance, weight-loss programs, on-site gyms and exercise classes, and health screenings for their employees, reported the New York Post.

According to the Society for Human Resource Management, more than two-thirds of companies offer such programs, including Des Moines-based Meredith Corp.

Companies hope that by providing these programs they will be able to open their employees’ minds and encourage them to eat better, lose weight, exercise and be in better overall shape. Health screenings mainly consist of a questionnaire that employees fill out regarding their lifestyle and habits, followed by a blood test that is used to evaluate individual risk factors.

Tim O’Neil, Meredith’s wellness manager, was quoted in the article saying, “Anytime the company can help an employee feel better, enhance their level of energy and help create a fun atmosphere at work, it’s mutually beneficial.”
