West Des Moines and Des Moines were ranked among the top 10 cities in the country in which to retire by a new report from Bankrate.com. West Des Moines was ranked fifth among 196 cities, while Des Moines came in at No. 9. Arlington, Va., was No. 1, followed by Alexandria, Va., Franklin, Tenn., and Silver Spring, Md. The survey included cost of living, crime rate, walkability, health care quality, state and local tax burden, personal well-being for seniors, weather, and the vitality of the local cultural scene. “We found that smaller cities and suburbs fared the best,” said Bankrate.com analyst Jill Cornfield. “Most seniors prefer to live in these types of communities because they offer access to big-city amenities without as much hustle, bustle and crime.” Click here to see the full list.
