West Des Moines Plan and Zoning Commission rejects comprehensive plan amendment
The West Des Moines Plan and Zoning Commission denied a request by Walters Cos. Inc. to change six of 15 acres in the comprehensive plan from medium density residential to office. The property is east of South 64th Street between Coachlight Drive and Wistful Vista Drive.
“The commission didn’t feel they gave a compelling reason to change the land,” said Kara Tragesser, a city planner for West Des Moines.
Walters Cos. withdrew its application after the commission denied the request.
Barry Reeves of Walters Cos. said the six-acre parcel was seen as the site of a cluster of 8,000-square-foot office buildings.
“It was just another option for us,” Reeves said.
Walters Cos. will continue to develop the other nine acres with multifamily units.
Reeves said the company has many other options for the land.
Land zoned in West Des Moines for medium density residential typically hosts six to 12 residential units per acre, similar to townhomes. A change to office zoning would allow the construction of a commercial building.
