Western Iowa Energy has announced plans to establish a “monarch fueling station” at its biodiesel plant near Wall Lake. The habitat for monarch butterflies will span roughly 4 acres. The plant will start the process by spraying to eradicate nonnative grasses in June and in late fall. The company will then do a dormant seeding of native plants and milkweed in the field in early November. The Monarch Fueling Station Project was established by the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association in partnership with the Iowa Monarch Conservation Consortium in December 2017, to help Iowa’s ethanol and biodiesel plants establish patches of monarch habitat on plant grounds.
