Des Moines Public Library business book pick: “Filterworld: How Algorithms Flattened Culture,” by Kyle Chayka

Why you should read it: This 2024 bestseller from Kyle Chayka, the New Yorker staff writer and author of “The Longing for Less,” delivers a historical investigation into our modern world ruled by algorithms. Chayka argues that all parts of culture — taste, aesthetics — are being guided and changed by algorithmic recommendations that dictate our experiences and choices. The book traces the story of this technology and how it overtook parts of business, culture and daily life.
