What’s sustainable about a Big Mac?

With a $2 billion global energy bill last year, McDonald’s Corp. is looking for ways to cut costs while being more environmentally aware, Bloomberg reported.
McDonald’s Vice President of Sustainability Bob Langert said the changes range from using LED light bulbs, to systematic changes such as working with the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association to improve sustainability in livestock production .
“Roughly speaking, our 33,500 restaurants are one third of our CO2 footprint,” Langert said. “The other two thirds are in supply chain, which largely comes from livestock. The biggest sustainability impact is the raising of the cattle in the fields and ranches, which is about three to four steps removed from McDonald’s.”
