Walgreens, a longtime fixture in downtown Des Moines, shuttered its store in late February, leaving property owner Lawmark Capital with about 12,000 square feet of vacant space to fill.

The former Walgreens was located in street-level space on the east side of the 25-story Financial Center at 606 Walnut St.

Jesse Bunney, director of operations for Lawmark Capital, told the Business Record that Walgreens has five years remaining on its lease. Lawmark Capital is working with Walgreens on either a buyout of the lease or a sublease.

“If they buy out, we will likely demise it and try to make it part of the renovation,” Bunney wrote in an email.

Lawmark Capital is renovating the Financial Center, including adding up to up to 198 apartment units on the lower 15 floors of the building. The street-level portion of the property is expected to include a restaurant, café and coffee shop, mail room and bike storage.
