Meredith Corp. directors have elected Tom Harty president and chief operating officer. He will report to chairman and CEO Steve Lacy, who will focus on long-term strategy, business expansion and acquisitions, according to a release.

Harty will relocate to Des Moines from New York, where he has been president of Meredith’s National Media Group. Jon Werther will take on that title. Werther currently serves as president of Meredith Digital and oversees the Better Homes and Gardens and Martha Stewart Living media brands.

Harty joined Meredith in 2004 as vice president of its magazine group and subsequently became its chief revenue officer and president of consumer magazines. He was named National Media Group president in 2010. Immediately prior to joining Meredith, Harty was senior vice president for Golf Digest companies, which are owned by Advance Publications Inc.

The announcement hints at a succession strategy. Lacy is 62. Meredith requires its top officers to retire at age 65. Lacy joined the company as chief operating officer in 1998 and was named president and chief operating officer in 2004, CEO in 2006 and chairman and CEO in 2010. Harty, 53, is following a similar path, with the ultimate decision left to the board of directors, a company spokesman said. Werther is 47.
