Nearly 30 percent of businesses in America now are owned by minorities, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2012 Survey of Business Owners.

Final results of this survey, which is taken every five years, were released last week at BizJournals.com.

The number of minority-owned businesses rose from 5.8 million in 2007 to 8 million in 2012. Meanwhile, the number of businesses owned by whites decreased by 1.1 million to 18.9 million. Sales at minority-owned businesses increased by nearly 35 percent from 2007 to 2012 to $1.4 trillion.

Meanwhile, the number of women-owned businesses increased by nearly 27 percent to 9.9 million in 2012. Their sales grew nearly 19 percent to $1.4 trillion in 2012.
