Editor’s Note:

About this time every year, the Business Record asks a number of you to check your crystal balls about what’s ahead in your industry  Amazingly, despite the inherent risk of predicting the future, you do it.

This year, it’s a particularly tricky assignment. So much of what will happen economically in Iowa in 2013 depends upon what Congress and the president do in the next month or so to reduce the economic impact of the so-called fiscal cliff.

Being an optimist, I believe our national leaders eventually will fuss their way to some

What I can tell you is that there’s a lot of good news inside this issue. The manufacturing industry expects expansion and revenue growth this year. Commercial real estate is keeping a steadily improving course. Iowa’s employment is  growing and Des Moines will see some fun cultural changes — a new downtown location for the Des Moines Social Club and renovation and expansion of the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden.

You may have a handle on what 2013 holds for your own industry, but we hope this issue gives you some quick looks at what to expect in other industries and drivers of the Greater Des Moines’ economy.

And finally, may 2013 bring you prosperity, generosity and kindness.
