Young Variety will donate 75 bicycles, helmets and locks to children on June 30 at Howe Elementary School, 2900 Indianola Ave. The Des Moines Police Department will give recipients a bike safety lesson as well.

Young Variety’s Bikes for Kids program works with schools and agencies across Iowa to locate children to receive a bike, helmet and lock courtesy of individual sponsors.

It is part of Variety’s Kids on the Go! initiative, which aims to help kids gain mobility, confidence, and independence. In 2011, Variety presented more than 775 bikes, helmets and locks to children throughout the state.

Variety gave away 13 specialty bikes to children with disabilities last year, and has given away 18 to date in 2012.
