Primary Health Care partners with EMBARC for interpretation program
Primary Health Care Inc. a nonprofit community health center, announced it has partnered with Ethnic Minorities of Burma Advocacy and Resource Center (EMBARC) to launch a language interpretation program for the more than 10,000 Burmese refugees who live in Central Iowa. The REACH program, Refugee Empowered Access to Community Health, aims to reduce the cost of healthcare while improving quality and patient experience by providing interpreting services. For Burmese refugee families, there are many barriers to medical care, including language. “When we work with EMBARC our patients are engaged,” said Lourdes Stevens, a nurse care manager at Primary Health Care. “They ask questions and request clarification.” The program is currently available only at PHC’s East Side Clinic at 3509 E. 29th St. in Des Moines.
