NOTEBOOK: Drake’s Bright College won’t be its first two-year college
During last week’s unveiling ceremony of the new John Dee Bright College, Drake University President Marty Martin remarked that it had been 60 years since a new college had been added to the university. That made me curious to find out what college that was. Not finding a reference to around 1960 on Drake’s historical timeline on its website, I posed the question to Drake’s communications director, Jarad Bernstein.
Turns out, Bernstein told me, that Martin’s reference was to University College, which in 1960 became the new name for Drake Community College, which was founded in 1946. University College is no longer in existence, Bernstein said. So actually, it’s been 74 years since the start of a new college at Drake. I had never before heard that Drake once had a community college. And now, it will once again.
